Go NY Times!

It's been a while since I've logged on to the NY Times website. I must say, absence makes the heart grow founder. Today was the first time in a long time where I've actually found an interesting sports article to read on the website; Not to mention the other business and political articles that they have today. They're really firing on all cylinders. To wit:

An article on the Yankees moving Derek Jeter to Center Field: Now I hate the Yankees, but I admire that they have gone out of their way to create a "Mystique" that imbues players with a certain pride for the team. Aside from a few selfish players and nutcases, they Yankees have players like Jeter and (gulp!) A-Rod who may be willing to play out of position to help the team win. When was the last time that happens in Red Sox Nation? Whenever a team official broaches the subject of moving a player, or asking them to learn to play better defense, said player launches a tirade. Remember the hullabaloo over getting Manny to either increase his range, or move from RF to LF (which he eventually did)? Or about getting Ortiz to drop weight and learn 1B? Or Kevin Millar moving from...nevermind. Listen, I'm just saying that you can bring up this subject with the Yankee's two best players without having people call into WFAN to say how much that player's not going to like it.

The only controversy was when Jeter injured his knee and was speculated to move to 2B. At the time they didn't have A-Rod, so Jeter stuck with SS, and I think he won a Gold Glove (awarded to the best defender per position, excluding the catch-all category of "Outfielder."). There was a minor controversy over the play of aging-CF Bernie Williams, and the Yankees, to their detriment, let him continue until his contract ran out.

An interesting article on the University of the South's desire to shed it's Confederate "heritage" and attract more students. About time, I guess. Seriously though, why was there so great a need to keep slavery? Why, as some people suggest, the South was going to abolish slavery, did they not do it sooner, BEFORE the war started? This goes beyond "States Rights" or stubbornness, or just the inability to have someone else boss you around. I don't see how Economics comes to play, because indentured servants cost just as much as slaves did, yet they ended that practice, set the white indentured servants free and continued with black slavery. How can hate be that deep-seeded, especially to a group of victims? What did they do to the South to deserve such a fate? Anyways, I wonder if the University's plan'll work.

I just can't believe this.
I won't have a snarky comment. Just read!

Don't forget about all the grumbling Jeter did when A-Rod was first considering joining the Yankees. With few options at 2B, it would've made much more sense for A-Rod (a former Gold Glove winner -- Jeter didn't win one until this past season) to play SS and for Jeter to move to 2B.

Granted, the potential move to CF doesn't have the barrier of egos. This time Jeter wouldn't be conceding his position to a newcomer -- but it's not as if he's always been the good soldier.

Aside: Could you imagine Nomar now joining the Yankees? The Holy Trinity of Shortstops from the 90's, now all on the Evil Empire. That's one of the Seven Signs, right?

Man, every time I play MVP baseball for xbox I put Normar on the Yankees and beat the beejeezus out of them with my souped up, Manny-less Red Sox team.
